Tiny Shetland Island Declares Independence Saturday, Jun 21 2008

I read an article this evening that caught my attention. The Reuters article tells how one man claimed ownership of a storm-beaten, two-and-a-half acre island by the name of Forvik off the British coast. Stuart Hill lives on the island in a tent after crashing on the island in 2001 during an attempt to sail around the British mainland. The story tells of Hill’s proclamation to the world that the island is now independent of the British crown, implying that it is free of British taxes and laws. Mr. Hill plans to print his own stamps and fly his own flag.

A Village Re-elects a Dead Mayor: Thoughts about Worship Tuesday, Jun 17 2008 

I read a Reuters article on Yahoo Odd News this morning which caught my attention. A link to the article may be found at the end of this paragraph. The article tells of a small Romanian village which held elections. Shortly after the elections began, the incumbent mayor died, but the people still voted for him even though they knew he had died just hours and even minutes earlier. A quote from one villager made me laugh: “I know he died, but I don’t want change.” (“Village Re-elects a Dead Mayor”)
